VergeIO Unveils VMware Essentials Upgrade Program

December 5, 2023 by George Crump Leave a Comment

Ann Arbor, Mich, December 5, 2023 — VergeIO, the leading VMware alternative, announced the immediate availability of VergeOS Small Data Center (SDC) Edition. The VergeOS SDC edition is more than a competitive swap out of VMware Essentials. It is a significant capability upgrade while lowering costs.

Ironically, VMware Essentials is missing the essential capabilities that small data centers need most. With VergeOS SDC, customers get everything included in VMware Essentials plus advanced storage services, live virtual machine migration, advanced layer two and layer three networking capabilities, and ransomware protection. Finally, unlike VMware Essentials, the VergeOS SDC Edition isn’t limited to three servers.

“VMware Essential customers especially are finding they are the “odd-man-out” as Broadcom slashes sales, support, training, and development resources while it absorbs VMware. Today, with VergeOS SDC, Essential customers can switch to a more affordable, easier-to-use platform that uses their existing hardware while improving capabilities and data resilience,” said VergeIO CEO Yan Ness.

Two Nodes Free

VergeIO doesn’t adhere to the complex and expensive practices of charging per CPU, per core, or the amount of storage capacity. VergeOS is priced per physical server, regardless of resources.

With the launch of VergeOS, SDC organizations have the opportunity to improve cost savings even further. Any customer who participates in a demonstration of the VergeOS before December 15th will receive an offer to buy one node license and get the second free, or buy two node licenses and get two node licenses free (matching the term of their subscriptions).

Seamless, Managed Migration

The IT team that manages a small data center is often a team of one. To assist these overworked IT professionals, VergeIO is including a white-glove migration service as part of VergeOS SDC. The VergeIO customer success team will migrate the organization’s VMs, work with them to verify compatibility, and provide training on how to take full advantage of all the capabilities of VergeOS. The training includes enabling its ransomware-resilient, IOfortify capabilities. Customers can migrate in less than a day, fully enable data protection, and be fully certified for VergeOS operations.

The Power to Grow

Unlike VMware Essentials, VergeOS SDC can seamlessly scale well beyond three nodes to VergeOS Enterprise, which supports an unlimited of nodes and advanced virtualization capabilities like GPU virtualization support, multi-site management, and a cloud-like recipe engine that can deploy complete workloads with a click of a button.

Survey Reveals VMware Customers’ Top Concerns

September 26, 2023 by Verge.IO Leave a Comment

Ann Arbor, Mich, September 26, 2023 — A recently conducted survey of hundreds of
VMware customers sheds light on growing concerns they have about the state of the
virtualization software and the company behind it – ranging from rising licensing costs,
ransomware vulnerabilities and a diminishing quality of support.

VergeIO, the Ultraconverged Infrastructure (UCI) company, spent two months surveying
and conducting in-person interviews with hundreds of existing VMware customers. The
results of the research have been released in a report entitled, “State of the VMware
Customer.”

Among the key issues found were:

Pricing Concerns – 84% of respondents indicated that they were concerned
about VMware’s current and future costs, with many highlighting “per-core”
renewal quotes and licensing agreements that require a commitment to year-
over-year spending increases as additional points of distress.

Ransomware Resiliency – With a rise in ransomware attacks exploiting specific
VMware vulnerabilities, 77% of customers worried about their data resiliency. A
number of those interviewed indicated that their VMware environments had
already suffered a ransomware attack, with recovery efforts taking more than 2
weeks despite having reasonable backup procedures in place.

Technical Support – 60% of customers expressed their concern with VMware’s
ability to provide high-quality technical support, with those interviewed stating the
difficulty in receiving support via phone calls. Others lamented slow response
times to emails during outages.

These survey results also come amidst rumors of VMware focusing on major enterprise
accounts with a shift towards a more expensive pricing model post the Broadcom
acquisition. Because of these concerns, more than 87% of respondents indicated that
they are currently researching alternative infrastructure platforms to VMware.
While rising prices were a top issue among VMware customers, a vast majority
indicated that they are unwilling to sacrifice capabilities in order to save money. Top
priorities of VMware replacement from those surveyed were seamless migration (76%),
ability to use existing hardware (72%) and the desire to do more with that existing
hardware (61%).

“Even before the Broadcom acquisition, customers have had concerns about VMware’s
pricing strategy and pace of development,” said George Crump, VergeIO CMO.

“VMware has built its offering through a series of technology acquisitions, resulting in a
solution that is bloated, complex and expensive. VergeIO takes a different approach.
VergeOS’ unified codebase streamlines the infrastructure, making it more scalable,
efficient, higher performing, less complex and easier to support – the very qualities that
respondents in the survey are looking for.”

Crump and VergeIO CEO Yan Ness will discuss the results of the report in an upcoming
webinar, “The State of the VMware Customer” which analyzes the results of the survey
and shows how VergeOS overcomes them. Registrants will receive a copy of the survey
in advance of the webinar. Register Here

VergeIO Makes IT Hills Out of Mountains for SkiBig3

August 22, 2023 by Verge.IO Leave a Comment

Company’s VergeOS replaces Hyper-V to enable more scalable and cost-effective data center infrastructure for vacation destination experts

Ann Arbor, Mich, August 22, 2023 — VergeIO, the Ultraconverged Infrastructure (UCI) company, today announced that SkiBig3 has selected the VergeOS platform over VMware and public cloud options for its enhanced data protection and the ability to scale quickly to meet the organization’s continued growth.

SkiBig3 works on behalf of ski resorts in Banff National Park – Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Mt. Norquay. With the goal to make the organizing and booking of winter ski vacations to Banff and Lake Louise as easy and stress-free as possible, SkiBig3 vacation planners help visitors find the best ski and stay packages at the most competitive rates through both its website and through its in-house reservation system. To make sure that SkiBig3 is able to build the perfect ski vacation for customers, it means that the IT systems have to work flawlessly.

SkiBig3 was looking to replace its Hyper-V solution with a more scalable and cost-effective data center infrastructure solution. The solution needed to provide enhanced data protection and make the organization more resilient to hardware failures or data loss events like ransomware. The company looked at VMware and the public cloud as potential alternatives but eventually selected VergeIO’s VergeOS because it provided better capabilities and better data resiliency at a lower cost.

VergeOS moves beyond legacy HCI configuration with its ultraconverged infrastructure (UCI), which integrates virtualization, storage, and networking into a single piece of software. This integration provides a high degree of efficiency that enables VergeOS to deliver more performance from existing hardware and a wider range of scale. VergeOS can scale up to meet the needs of the most demanding enterprise and scale down to fit the constraints of the edge.

“VMware is so complex, you must be certified to have a chance of operating it,” said Mitch Matula, IT Manager at SkiBig3. “VergeOS, by comparison, is so easy to use you can figure out most tasks by clicking around in the GUI or going through the self-paced training on the VergeIO website. It is just one package instead of a never-ending list of add-ons.”

SkiBig3 is confident that VergeOS is a platform that will last for years, improve its data resiliency, and help it provide Banff-area visitors with the promised stress-free vacation experience. The goal for this coming year is to add a disaster recovery site, leveraging VergeIO’s global inline deduplication and replication to move data to a remote location.

“Without a system protecting against hardware failures and data loss, SkiBig3 customers’ ability to buy passes and packages could be severely impacted and make the promise of a stress-free experience impossible,” said George Crump, VergeIO CMO. “The benefits of VergeOS to provide complete application availability and data protection over other solutions like VMware and the public cloud was attractive to the SkiBig3 Board and overcome the IT challenges they faced with their Hyper-V environment. Our ability to provide a stress-free solution was a win-win for SkiBig3 and their Banff-area visitors.”

Join SkiBig3 and VergeIO live for an in-depth look at how one of the largest Ski Resorts in Canada is using VergeOS to reduce hardware acquisition costs, improve data resiliency, and simplify IT operations during our webinar “A Customer’s Journey: VMware, Cloud or VergeOS.”

VergeIO Unveils IOclone To Solve the VM Snapshot Problem

April 25, 2023 by George Crump Leave a Comment

Ann Arbor, Mich, April 25th, 2023 — VergeIO, the Ultraconverged Infrastructure (UCI) company, today announced the launch of IOclone, a new solution that solves the virtualization snapshot problem facing users today. VMware and other virtualized environments suffer from highly inefficient snapshots and because of performance concerns, customers can only maintain a few active snapshots. This level of retention is insufficient for adequate data protection. With IOclone, customers can now leverage the built-in global data deduplication capabilities of VergeOS to create complete clones of virtual machines (VM) within milliseconds, regardless of VM size. Each clone is immutable and space efficient, initially consuming no additional capacity.

Hypervisors without the powerful capabilities of IOclone require customers to use expensive array-based snapshots or integrate with backup software solutions, forcing customers into an expensive and complicated multi-step solution for data protection. By comparison, IOclone is a single-step process tightly integrated into VergeOS. Once IT sets up a cloning policy, snapshots happen regularly without administrative intervention.

Now customers can create and maintain thousands of space-efficient copies of virtual machines or even virtual data centers without impacting performance. Both the original production instance and clones perform at the full performance of the infrastructure. Clones are instantly available for use in testing, QA, and development purposes, or customers can create “golden masters” and spawn hundreds or even thousands of VMs or virtual data centers (VDCs) from the original, again without impacting performance.

“Both clones and snapshots typically have some overhead in the capacity they consume and the processing required to use them. Clones typically have to make a copy of all of the metadata information, which means the cloning process takes some time upfront, but then they are ready to use and independent. Snapshots trade up front processing time and instead show performance degradation when in use or during clean-up,” said Greg Campbell, VergeIO founder and CTO. “IOclone delivers the best of both. Because our deduplication is part of the metadata in our filesystem, we get all the performance and independence benefits of cloning without their upfront overhead.”

Customers can execute IOclone on the virtual machine, the volume, or an entire virtual data center (VDC). In the same way that a virtual machine is an encapsulation of a server, a VDC clone is an encapsulation of the entire data center. It includes all the VMs within the data center and all the storage and networking policies, delivering near-instant recovery.

IOclone does not require specialized storage controllers or storage data processing units. Thanks to the efficiency of VergeOS, it works with off-the-shelf servers using commodity flash and hard disk drives within the VergeOS environment. It is integrated into VergeOS and is available now at no additional charge to VergeOS customers. Customers looking to migrate off VMware can leverage VergeIO’s IOprotect and benefit from the immutable limitless protection of IOclone.

To learn more about IOclone, join VergeIO for “TechTalk, A Deep Dive into Virtual Infrastructure File Systems.” Live on May 4th at 1:00 PM ET / 10:00 AM PT.

VergeIO Slashes Cost of VMware Disaster Recovery

March 28, 2023 by George Crump Leave a Comment

Ann Arbor, Mich, March 28th, 2023 — VergeIO, the Ultraconverged Infrastructure (UCI) company, today announced that it is providing a robust disaster recovery solution, IOprotect, for VMware. The solution promises to reduce customer costs by more than 60% and, in most cases, requires no additional hardware while improving recoverability and resiliency.

IOprotect is part of VergeIO’s Ultraconverged Infrastructure (UCI) solution VergeOS and enables customers to take a safe first step of a VMware Exit Strategy. Customers can load IOprotect on the existing hardware at their disaster recovery location and replicate, in near real-time, their VMware virtual machines to it. IOprotect enables customers to cut costs almost immediately while increasing the number of workloads protected thanks to the efficiency of VergeOS.

“Disaster Recovery is an excellent first step in a VMware Exit strategy. It enables customers to fully vet the potential alternative by having it run a function that is critical and vital to the enterprise,” said Yan Ness, VergeIO CEO, “Later, once customers experience the stability and robust capabilities of VergeOS, they seamlessly upgrade to the full version of VergeOS. Then they are ready to transition their production environment as their VMware licensing agreements expire, face a VMware audit, or want to avoid another round of disruptive upgrades.”

The IOprotect solution enables customers to maintain continuously updated copies of their VMware virtual machines on VergeOS but does not replace backup solutions. Instead, it is a radically affordable DR alternative to software from VMware, Zerto, array-based replication Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) bundles. It is also significantly easier to set up, operate and maintain.

IOprotect runs on the customer’s hardware at a site they deem appropriate for disaster recovery, eliminating the shock of unexpectedly high monthly bills from public cloud providers. With IOprotect, customers can restart protected workloads within minutes of a site outage. If organizations don’t have a suitable DR site, they can connect with one of VergeIO’s IOpartners and easily address their disaster recovery needs with a few mouse clicks.

Due to the solution’s cost-effectiveness and modest hardware requirements, many customers leverage existing hardware to create an on-premises DR instance for disasters that are not site-wide. This “on-site” DR environment protects them from local failures like storage system failure, double drive failures, and ransomware corruption. The VergeOS environment maintains immutable copies of the customer’s VMware virtual machines, which increases their resiliency to a ransomware attack.

Disasters and ransomware attacks are something to prepare for but not something customers must deal with daily. It doesn’t make sense to pay full price for a solution that sits waiting for use. IOprotect low price enables customers to reduce DR costs and begin investigating a possible VMware Exit strategy. IOprotect is licensed per target node, not capacity. It can start with as few as two nodes and support unlimited virtual machine sources. Customers can run workloads for 36 hours to validate disaster recovery readiness.

Customers can easily upgrade the solution for other use cases like workload spike mitigation, testing, development, reporting, and eventually complete VMware migration.

To learn more, join VergeIO on Wednesday, April 12th at 12:30 pm ET, for “ VMware Disaster and Ransomware Disaster Recovery, The Three New Best Practices,” for an interactive whiteboard session describing the three new best practices for rapidly recovering from these worse case scenarios.

VergeIO Announces VMware Exit Strategy

March 6, 2023 by George Crump Leave a Comment

Seamless Migration Reduces VMware costs by more than 50%

Ann Arbor, Michigan – March 7th, 2023 — In response to ongoing frustration with VMware’s pricing policies and concerns over the impending Broadcom acquisition, VergeIO, the Ultraconverged Infrastructure company, today announced the immediate release of its VMware Exit Strategy. The program includes a competitive trade-in to VergeOS and a seamless migration solution powered by a new feature, IOmigrate. Customers can leverage existing hardware and reduce VMware costs by as much as 50%.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by customers calling in looking for an alternative to the escalating cost of VMware and general IT complexity, so today, we are releasing our VMware migration tool that provides a seamless migration solution to our hypervisor, network, and storage platform. We also know that IT is stretched thin, so we’ve partnered with leading integrators to provide a white-glove turnkey migration service,” said Yan Ness, CEO of VergeIO.

IOmigrate is built into the core VergeOS environment and leverages VMware’s change block tracking (CBT) technology to synchronize virtual machines with VergeOS VMs in near real-time. Customers can even use IOmigrate as a backup and disaster recovery solution while testing converted VMs. Because of the efficiency of VergeOS, customers will realize better performance and hardware utilization. As a result, they can increase the number of workloads while delaying hardware purchases, further reducing data center costs.

Storage services also benefit from migration. VergeOS includes global inline deduplication, unlimited, immutable snapshots, and two-factor authentication, further reducing costs and improving ransomware resiliency. Complete networking capabilities are part of VergeOS. It delivers full layer 2, layer 3, firewall, and DNS functionality.

VergeIO’s VMware Exit Strategy includes a partnership with IOintegrators, VergeIO’s certified reseller partners that are experts in VMware to VergeOS migrations. If the organization doesn’t have the time or resources to perform the migration, IOintegrators can complete the task quickly without impacting production applications. Once complete, the customer merely needs to verify the migration and activate the VergeOS cluster.

“We are excited to partner with VergeOS to enable our customers to exit from VMware and enjoy an environment that performs better, scales further, and is infinitely easier to manage. Using our white-glove service makes conversion simple and easy,” said Howie Evens, Vice-President of Dallas Digital Services.

Once activated, the customer has new capabilities that include

  • Mixed node support
  • Improved performance
  • Ransomware resilience
  • Scalability to over 100 nodes

IOmigrate and its related services are available now. For more details, go to VergeIO’s VMware Exit Strategy page and/or register to attend their webinar, where they will show IOmigrate converting a live VMware environment to VergeOS on March 16th at 1:00 PM ET and 10:00 AM PT. Register Now.

About VergeIO

VergeIO is the Ultraconverged Infrastructure (UCI) company. Unlike hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), it rotates the traditional IT stack (compute, storage, and networking) into an integrated data center operating system, VergeOS. Its efficiency enables greater workload density on the same hardware with high levels of data resiliency. The result is dramatically lower costs and greatly simplified IT.
