VergeOS · Fight Data Center Inflation

Fight Data Center Inflation: Use Less RAM, Keep Your Servers, Buy Smarter Storage

AI buildouts have reset the price of memory, flash and even hard drives, and server lead times now run months. VergeOS answers with a platform that needs less of what got expensive: as much as 50% less RAM per VM than VMware, the servers you already own, refurbished drives made safe and hard drives where they make sense.

The Problem

A Demand Event, Not a Supply Failure

Nothing broke this time. Hyperscalers building AI infrastructure bought the industry’s output, and suppliers chose not to build their way out. Every refresh plan and three-year budget assumed storage and memory would keep getting cheaper. That assumption broke in four months.

Memory

DRAM contract prices rose 90 to 95 percent in Q1 2026 alone, and memory is now about 35 percent of a server’s bill of materials. Supply stays constrained through at least 2028.

Flash

Enterprise SSD contract prices rose 53 to 58 percent in the same quarter. A 30TB TLC SSD that cost about $3,000 in mid-2025 now costs nearly $11,000.

Hard Drives

Major hard drive makers have sold out 2026 production and allocated most nearline capacity into 2028. Disk is cheaper, not plentiful.

Servers

Lead times of three to six months mean hardware ordered today may not arrive before the next VMware renewal conversation begins.

In Omdia research commissioned by VergeIO among 400 North American IT buyers, 98 percent are consolidating infrastructure layers or exploring it, and software-defined storage ranks first for planned investment among organizations that do not run it today. See the research →

Optimize RAM

Avoid the RAM Supercycle

As much as 50% less RAM per VM than VMware. Deduplicated storage caching at the hypervisor level. No need for a RAM cache per VM.

  • A lean platform. VergeOS runs virtualization, storage, networking and data protection from one code base at 2–3% memory overhead, compared with double-digit percentages for multi-product stacks that reserve tens of gigabytes per host before a VM starts.
  • One deduplicated cache. The RAM cache works across all VMs on all nodes and draws from already-deduplicated storage, so it holds only unique blocks. No duplicate copies of the same data in every node’s cache.
  • No reactive tricks. Ballooning, page sharing and hypervisor swapping manage scarcity after it hits. None of them lower the physical RAM you have to buy.
  • No RAID controllers. Built-in replication and ioGuardian replace hardware RAID controllers, which also consume RAM and keep rising in price.

Use Your Servers

No Forklift Upgrade Required

VergeOS runs on your current servers, extending their useful life and eliminating capital expenditure.

  • Any x86 server. Dell VxRail, HPE, Cisco, Lenovo and commodity white boxes. Mix generations, CPU vendors and drive layouts in one instance. VergeOS has never deprecated hardware.
  • No lead time. The migration starts on hardware already on the floor, with no six-month wait for new servers.
  • Fewer servers. Lower RAM use raises VM density. Topgolf cut each of its 100-plus venues from six-node VxRail clusters to three-node VergeOS clusters, a 50% server reduction. Alinsco Insurance stayed on its VxRail hardware and gained memory headroom.
  • Retired servers become part donors. Pull their DRAM and NVMe drives and redistribute them to the active nodes. Mixed node types mean the specs do not have to match.

Hard Drive Tiering

Put the Long Tail on Disk, Under Your Control

A 15.36TB NVMe SSD quoted at about $706 per terabyte. A 24TB hard drive came in at about $56 per terabyte. Flash now costs roughly 12 times as much per terabyte as disk.

  • You choose the tier. Set a preferred tier per virtual drive and change it live, with no reboot and no maintenance window.
  • Disk that performs. Metadata on NVMe, write reordering, read prefetch and the deduplicated RAM cache make hard drives viable for the long tail of workloads.
  • Real savings. Moving a SQL Server VM’s 200 GB data drive from NVMe to hard drives cut the VM’s storage media cost from $263 to $133, a 49% drop, and the OS, log and tempdb stayed on flash.
  • At enterprise scale. Put 80% of a 200 TB estate on the hard drive tier and raw media cost falls from about $141,200 to $37,200, a $104,000 saving.
  • Use it where it fits. Hard drives are not an escape from the supercycle. They are a tool for cold data and predictable tiers, next to a platform that consumes less RAM and flash.

Refurbished Servers and Drives

Refurbished Hardware, Made Resilient

Refurbished enterprise SSDs typically sell 40 to 60 percent below new pricing with 80 to 95 percent of rated write life remaining. The objection is not cost. It is risk. Every drive and server fails eventually, new or refurbished, so resiliency belongs in the software.

Refurbished Drive RiskHow VergeOS Handles It
Tampered SMART dataSeven SMART attributes reported continuously on every drive, plus an intake stress test and rate-of-change alerts that expose a reset wear counter.
OEM firmware lockThe controller firmware is read at admission, and locked drives are refused before they join the pool.
Residual dataBuy from suppliers with per-drive NIST 800-88 sanitization. VergeFS formats each drive into its own metadata layer, so prior data is never addressable.
Batch failure correlationSynchronized wear alerts give early warning. RF2 holds one drive loss, RF3 holds two and ioGuardian holds anything beyond by streaming missing blocks inline.

RF3 plus ioGuardian has carried a documented customer event in which four of six hosts went down at the same time, with zero downtime and zero data loss. Learn about ioGuardian →

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Data Center Inflation

What is data center inflation?

Data center inflation is the sharp rise in the cost of memory, flash, hard drives and servers driven by AI infrastructure demand. DRAM contract prices rose 90 to 95 percent and enterprise SSD contract prices rose 53 to 58 percent in Q1 2026 alone, and server lead times stretched to months.

How long will memory and flash prices stay high?

Suppliers have chosen not to build their way out, and major forecasters do not expect prices to return to 2025 levels within their planning horizon. DRAM supply is expected to stay constrained through at least 2028.

How does VergeOS use less RAM?

VergeOS uses as much as 50 percent less RAM per VM than VMware. The platform runs at 2 to 3 percent memory overhead, and one deduplicated cache works across all VMs and nodes at the hypervisor level, so there is no need for a RAM cache per VM.

Why doesn’t memory ballooning solve the problem?

Ballooning, transparent page sharing and hypervisor swapping react to memory pressure after it occurs. None of them reduce the total physical RAM the infrastructure needs, which is the cost that rises during the supercycle.

Do I need new servers to move to VergeOS?

No. VergeOS runs on existing x86 servers from any manufacturer, including Dell VxRail, HPE, Cisco and Lenovo. There is no forklift upgrade and no wait for new server deliveries.

What happens to servers that are no longer needed?

After consolidation, retired servers become part donors. Their DRAM and NVMe drives move to the servers that stay in production, and VergeOS supports mixed node types so the specs do not need to match.

Are refurbished SSDs safe to run in production?

On VergeOS, yes. SMART telemetry and intake testing catch tampered wear data, firmware-locked drives are refused at admission and VergeFS keeps prior data unaddressable. RF2, RF3 and ioGuardian absorb drive failures, including correlated batch failures.

How much can refurbished drives save?

Refurbished enterprise SSDs typically sell 40 to 60 percent below new pricing and retain 80 to 95 percent of their rated write life.

Should I move workloads to hard drives?

Hard drives cost roughly one-twelfth as much per terabyte as NVMe flash and suit cold data and the long tail of workloads. VergeOS lets administrators set the tier per virtual drive and change it live, and its NVMe metadata, prefetch and deduplicated cache keep disk responsive.

How does VergeOS licensing help with rising hardware costs?

VergeOS is licensed per physical server, not per core, capacity or RAM. Moving to denser servers or larger drives adds no software cost.

Need Less of What Got Expensive

Use less RAM, keep the servers you own and buy storage on your terms.
