VergeOS delivers resiliency and centralized management across Edge, ROBO, and Venue environments. With one platform, IT can keep remote sites independent while managing them all from a single pane of glass.
  • Blog
      • Legacy HCI Took Control of Your Data CenterLegacy HCI promised to simplify the data center, then set three clocks IT no longer controls: the renewal date, the hardware refresh, and the servers you are allowed to buy. This post breaks down how each clock got set, and how a single-codebase Private Cloud Operating System hands all three back.
      • Why Are VMware Executives Joining VergeIO?Zia Yusuf, VMware's former ecosystem chief, invested in VergeIO and joined its board, the second VMware leader in weeks after CTO Kit Colbert. One built the partner engine, the other set the technology. Both reached the same verdict: leaving VMware means moving to a private cloud operating system.
      • Using Infrastructure to Prepare for RansomwareMost data centers still react to ransomware through backup, and the recovery gap costs them days. Using infrastructure to prepare for ransomware changes the posture. VergeOS contains attacks inside a VDC, holds clean immutable snapshots, detects encryption in the storage layer within minutes, and recovers the data center, not one VM.

Saratoga Casino Holdings Owns Its Stack Again

A four-property gaming operator left VMware, a mandated Cisco and Pure Storage stack, and rigid appliance vendors behind. With VergeOS running on hardware it chose itself, the team cut cost, held performance, and took back control.

Saratoga Casino Holdings operates four casinos and depends on IT to track play, protect revenue, and keep the floor running. The other three properties sit in Black Hawk (CO), Natchez (MS), and Happy Valley (PA). IT for all of them reports to one person, Scott Bargis, the Corporate Director of IT, who has spent 12 years with the company and the last 4 running technology across the group.

The Challenge

A Stack the Team Never Chose, and a Bill That Kept Climbing

Inherited and expensive

A partner standardized the environment years ago on Cisco UCS blades, Pure Storage arrays, Cisco fabrics, and the VMware hypervisor, then wound down and left the team to own all of it. Three pressures then arrived together.

  • Aging server hardware across the group
  • The post-Broadcom VMware renewal, which asked Scott to give up perpetual licenses he already owned and pay again
  • Roughly $50,000 a year in Pure Storage maintenance on two mirrored arrays

What the business needed

Scott wanted a platform that runs on the hardware he chooses, grows by adding a node, and drops the licensing and maintenance drag. The workloads are Microsoft heavy. Of roughly 50 VMs at Saratoga, 48 run Windows, 4 are large SQL servers, and player tracking sits behind a dozen VMs and a SQL warehouse.

  • Hardware freedom, not a locked appliance list
  • Scale by node, not by forklift
  • Predictable cost the board could approve
The Evaluation

The Obvious Alternatives Fell Short

VMware

The Broadcom renewal turned a paid-for perpetual environment into a repeat purchase plus maintenance. The exact complaint heard across the install base, and Scott felt it directly.

Nutanix

Priced almost as high as VMware and heavier to run. Scott put it in the overly complicated and too expensive bucket.

Small-footprint HCI

A lightweight appliance fit a tiny property, but the nodes, capacity, RAM, and performance could not scale to a site of Saratoga’s size.

Own Your Stack Again

Hardware Freedom, Not a Vendor Mandate

Nutanix and appliance vendors sell their own hardware or a narrow compatibility list. The buyer does not get to pick. VergeOS runs on the hardware the customer chooses. Scott used the CXTEC equal2new® program, matched capacity to real need, and never had to shop on Dell.com.

Half the price

VergeOS came in at almost half the appliance quote, with more compute, RAM, and storage.

$50-60K saved

Buying new added little value over equal2new®, so the team chose equal2new® without hesitation.

Hardware you choose

No locked appliance list. VergeOS runs on the nodes the customer selects.

Sized to need

VergeIO and CXTEC sized the cluster to real capacity and delivered four nodes in about two weeks.

The Migration

A Cutover That Stayed Boring

01

Stage and back up

Each workload is staged and backed up out of VMware into VergeOS while production keeps running.

02

Build the new first

The new casino-management workloads, a large SQL server, application servers, and Linux gateways, go onto VergeOS first.

03

Final sync at cutover

Power down the source VM, run a final sync, and the delta moves in seconds to a few minutes.

04

Boot on VergeOS

Start the VM on the VergeIO side and move on. Old management VMs stay on VMware until powered off.

One server’s final sync ran three hours inside a six-hour window. Scott did not sweat it.
“If you blindfolded me, I wouldn’t be able to tell.” Scott Bargis, Corporate Director of IT, Saratoga Casino Holdings, on VergeOS performance against a dedicated all-flash array
The Results

Same Feel, Lower Cost, Room to Grow

Matched performance

Replicated copies of the same database run on both platforms. Scott cannot tell them apart.

Hands-free operations

Once migration finishes, the team spends little time in the hypervisor. Patching happens at the OS.

Scale by node

Growing storage or compute means adding a node, not swapping mismatched blades or expanding a single array.

Lower cost

The board saw side-by-side columns. VergeOS won on price and on room to grow.

“It is as easy as advertised.”

On the migration

“It is no different other than my checkbook has a little more money in it.”
