I have fifteen years of vSphere muscle memory. How long until my team is productive?

Do I have to buy new hardware?

This sounds like trading one lock-in for another.
Fair question. The practical tests are: is there core math? No — per-VM or per-node, one SKU. Are there bundle minimums? No. Is the license tied to specific hardware? No. Are the enterprise features gated behind tiers you’ll be upsold later? No — they’re in the base license. Your escape hatch is that your hardware stays generic and your VMs stay portable.
Nutanix says AHV is included. Why not just go there?
AHV is included; the rest of the portfolio isn’t. Nutanix licenses per-core tiers, with Prism Pro, Era, Files and Objects priced separately, and the architecture runs controller VMs that consume 16–32 GB of RAM plus multiple vCPUs on every node before your first workload boots. RF3 resilience requires at least five nodes. VergeOS puts storage in the OS — no CVMs — and ioGuardian protects against 2+ node failures without additional mirrors.
Hyper-V and Proxmox are cheaper. What am I giving up?
