Hands-On Lab Course 2
Data Recovery
Introduction to Course Two
Welcome to the second course in the VergeOS hands-on lab series. This course builds on course one. We will use VergeOS' snapshot technology to recover each virtual machine as a whole and to recover a single file within each virtual machine.
Although we have created a snapshot schedule for each of our VMs based on timing, those may not have executed yet, so our first step is to create a manual snapshot. Manual snapshots are often used to capture the latest state of a virtual machine or a virtual data center (tenant) before taking action on those objects. The most common is to take a manual snapshot before a software upgrade or patch application. In this case, we need to back up the virtual machines before deleting them.
To start, click the dashboard item in the main menu to open the main dashboard display.
Next, navigate to the virtual machine dashboard by selecting Dashboard from the Virtual Machines menu item in the top menu bar, or by clicking the Virtual Machines card in the main dashboard window pane.
On the VM Dashboard screen, you will see two active VMs: the ones we created in the last lab. You may also see a list of snapshots that were executed from the schedules we set up in the previous lab. From the VM Dashboard screen, select either Virtual Machines from the left context menu or click on the Virtual Machines card.
Clicking Virtual Machines will display the two virtual machines we created in course 1. Check the box next to the Windows VM. When you do that, the left context menu will change. Select "View" from the context menu. You can also double-click on the row with the Windows VM.
Once you do that, you will see the detail screen for the Windows VM. We used this screen to assign tags and apply a snapshot schedule. We will now take a manual snapshot of this VM. In the left context menu, there is a snapshot drop-down menu. Click Snapshots to reveal additional snapshot-related actions, then select "Take Snapshot."
